Mustang number 10,000,000 is a GT convertible painted Wimbledon White, with a V8 and a six-speed manual transmission. The spec pays homage to the first serialized Mustang, VIN 001. That first 'Stang was the same color, body type, and engine type. Back then, the optional V8 fed 164 horsepower to a three-speed manual transmission. Ten million iterations later, the V8 of choice?Ford's monstrous 5.0-liter Coyote?kicks out nearly triple that.

As milestones go, this one is huge. Just a little more than 54 years after the first Ford Mustang was unveiled at the 1964 World?s Fair in New York, the 10-millionth one rolled off the assembly line. It?s been an amazing journey, as Mustang has solidified its place in American automotive history ? the sport coupe for everyone.

Under a sunny sky, Ford Mustangs of every shape and color and design built over the past half-century filled the huge parking lot outside Ford global headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan on August 8th.

Workers who build and sell Mustangs gathered with collectors who purchased them. Dozens gathered to caravan from Dearborn to the Flat Rock Assembly plant to honor production of the 10 millionth Mustang. The procession crawled along for 19.7 miles.

When the Ford Mustang launched, it created a whole new class of vehicle. It was the world?s first Pony car?despite being named after a plane, not an animal. Designer John Najjar suggested the name Mustang after the World War II P-51 Mustang fighter plane.

Since its release, it has made appearances in more than 500 movies to date, including being featured in one of the most memorable car chase scenes in cinematic history. It?s been the subject of dozens of popular songs, including multiple love songs in which the object of desire was the car itself.

The Mustang has been America?s best-selling sports car over the last 50 years. TREMEC is proud to be part of this legacy ? transmitted torque in the GT until 2010, the GT-500 until 2014 and the GT-350 in the present.
